This design was inspired by the exquisite wrought-iron gates that separate the aisles in the Ambulatory from the High Altar. These gates, in the extravagent Baroque style, dating from around 1700, were made by Jean Tijou, a French master ironworker. Tijou was responsible for most of the ornamental ironwork in the Cathedral and these gates, which were originally part of the organ screen, are considered to be his best work in England.
